Tarbat: Two Houses and a Castle
17 October 2019
Starts: 09:30
Ends: 13:00

Guided HAF walk, exploring the remains of two great Mackenzie houses

A guided HAF walk east of Kildary, exploring the remains of two great Mackenzie houses, and the preceding castle site. Option of a walk down to the firth

Meet at 0930 at NH 7669 7351, which is the end of the adopted road, east of Tarbat Mains, south of Kildary. There is parking along the roadside there. Please contact Roland (roland.spencerjones@gmail.com) if you are coming.

We will visit the remains of two houses: New Tarbat and the succeeding Tarbat House, near Kiildary. These were the seat of the Cromartie Mackenzies after they re-located from Castle Leod. The present building is now an imposing ruin, but it has a great history. We can see the House and the walled garden

Milntown Castle site sits on an impressive motte, although there is now little structure left.

And for those who would like, there's an optional walk down to the firth shoreline afterwards, lasting about 90 minutes. There's a fish trap to see, and great views of the eastern end of the Cromarty Firth. If you're joining us for this, probably best to bring a bit of lunch, drinks, etc.
