NOSAS Field Trip to Caithness CANCELLED
24 April 2020

Day One of a four-day Visit to Caithness

NOSAS is planning to spend the weekend of Friday April 24th – Monday 27th next year on the Caithness coast.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING NOW is for you to decide if you’re coming and what sort of accommodation you want to book. We will be based at Forse House, a huge and magnificent building with a range of reasonable self-catering and B&B options, see this downloadable information sheet. We’ve made a provisional booking but they will soon want to know our specific room requirements. Please respond to Anne Coombs (annecoombs1@gmail.com) to let her know your choice of accommodation. It’ll be first come first served for those wanting the self-catering accommodation. We’re looking forward to hearing from you, and to sharing the wonders of Caithness together!

There is a campsite at Dunbeath 6 minutes from Forse, or at Wick 24 minutes away. The nearest decent hotel is the Portland Hotel at Lybster, 6 minutes from Forse.

There is so much archaeology in Caithness, there will be so much to see and do, it’ll be hard to work out what we won’t have time for. However, at this early stage, Anne and Roland are thinking that the three full days could be:

  • Berriedale Braes
  • The Forse landscape
  • Dunbeath Strath.

We hope to be doing some prospecting and surveying, as well as just looking at well-known sites. A local host will be Meg Sinclair of both Dunbeath Heritage and Caithness Archaeology Trust.
