Title: Archaeological survey: thoughts on its past, present and future. A personal view of archaeological survey at RCAHMS/HES considering strategy, changing techniques and common pitfalls
George Geddes is a field archaeologist working for Historic Environment Scotland. Born and brought up near Kirkhill outside Inverness, he studied archaeology at Edinburgh (Environmental 1997) and embarked on a career as a field archaeologist in commercial archaeology in 2002. Swiftly moving on to specialise in buildings and metric survey, he completed an MA in Buildings Archaeology at York. In 2007 he took up the post of National Trust for Scotland archaeologist on St Kilda, and worked with RCAHMS on their survey of the islands. In 2008 he then joined RCAHMS (now HES) as an archaeological investigator subsequently working on a wide range of large-area surveys and measured surveys across Scotland. He completed a PhD on St Kilda’s archaeology in 2019. George returned to live in the Highlands in 2022.
