NOSAS Scrub Clearance Carn Glas, Essich, Stratherrick
14 September 2025 10:00
Carn Glas Chambered Cairn NH 6493 3830
In 2023 a series of NoSAS Work Parties cleared the gorse scrub obscuring this important Neolithic Chambered Cairn lying 3 miles to the south of Inverness. When you consider what the site was like before, this was a fantastic effort and the monument is looking so much clearer to view.
Unfortunately there has been a little bit of gorse regeneration from seeds and a fewremaining stumps, as the pictures below show. I have managed to remove these from the southern cairn but I would very much appreciate help in taking the rest of the re-growth and dead stems off the north east end of the cairn as well as an area in the centre.
This work is planned for the 14th September, subject to weather conditions. I hope to be on site by 10am but please turn up at your convenience. Work may only take a couple of hours but may well extend into the afternoon, depending how many people turn up. So please bring a packed lunch and your own refreshments.
Parking is restricted to laybys on the road to Bunachton as shown on the map so, if possible, can you please share cars to maximise the space available. Make your way on the route indicated to the cairn.
Tools required – handsaws – including pruning saws, secateurs, loppers, and thornproof gloves. Kneeling mats may be useful as we will have to remove the stems at ground level. While we may be able to supply some tools, please bring your own in you have them. The stems are mostly small but it would be good to remove the remaining dead stumps. Wet weather gear should also be brought.
