A Walk to a Shieling above Cannich

05 April 2026 13:30-16:50

Roland Spencer-Jones is leading a walk up to an interesting shieling site above Cannich. The steep brae beside the Allt Coillte opposite Invercannich has interesting remains of settlement, illegal whisky distilling and, at the top, a summer shieling settlement. The trip will take in all of these features, and in particular consider the role of shielings in the life of pre-18th century farmers. All members of NOSAS will be welcome on the walk.

The walk starts at 1330, and will take about 3 hours. Park in the Forestry Land Scotland entrance to Mullach an Tuir forest, opposite Highland Retreats at Invercannich. NH 34185 32077. Most of the walk will be on a hill track, but it’ll be a steep walk up the brae, particularly to start with. A reasonable level of fitness is required. Ensure you bring food, drinks, waterproofs, stout footwear, a curious mind, and a brave spirit.
