HMP Highland’s Bronze & Iron Age Origins: An Update and Post-excavation progress
From June to November 2022, AOC undertook an archaeological watching brief of the groundworks and a simultaneous excavation on the site of the new Inverness Prison – HMP Highland. As a result, over 700 features were discovered, including at least 16 roundhouses, two palisade-style enclosures, several four-post structures, evidence of hearths, midden pits, and high-status metalworking. A complete post-excavation analysis is currently in progress. This presentation will offer a summary overview of the primary structures and artefacts that were found, some of the preliminary post-excavation results and updates on interpretations.

Peta has worked as a professional archaeologist for 25 years. She joined AOC Inverness just over five years ago and has since focused primarily on projects in the Highlands and Western Isles. After graduating from the University of York she gained and developed a wide range of archaeological experience working in commercial, research and community-based archaeological projects across the UK. In 2010, she also earned an MLitt from the University of Glasgow. This has led to specific interests in archaeological field practice and the late prehistoric/early historic period in Scotland.
