The Archaeolgy of Designed Landscapes
The 18th-century in Scotland was a growing period of landscape design. Large estates were developing their surroundings not only along economic lines, but also in consideration of the artistic statements and the feelings they created in people as they journeyed around them. This was an encapsulation of the philosophical and aesthetic concerns of the Scottish Enlightenment. By examining some of prominent philosophies of the 18th-century the talk will discuss the archaeological remains of two designed landscapes (Newhailes in Musselburgh and Brodie Castle in Moray) and discuss how philosophy and art history influenced their design.
