NOSAS MAD Evening - History & Archaeology of Mining in the Highlands

The venue for this season's MAD evenings is St Ninian's Church Hall in Culduthel Road, Inverness. This link will allow Google Maps to get you there. 

Theevening will start with the NOSAS AGM.

The presentations of this MAD evening will provide both an overview of mining in the Highlands and some specific examples of coal, lead and graphite mines. Are the issues about starting and continuing mines common to all mines? What archaeological remains are left? Is there a memory of mining in the local communities? Etc

  • Cathy Dagg: An overview of Scottish mining, including consideration of geology, and the British Geological Survey
  • Nick Lindsay: Coal mining in Brora
  • Roland Spencer-Jones: the lead mines of Struy and the graphite mine of Strathfarrar.
